Cake Book
Treats for the patients at Hill End
By Sian Butcher
Here is an image taken from the ‘Cake Book’ that shows the various types of cakes and puddings made. The earliest date recorded was 25th August 1944 and and last date recorded was 16th February 1955.
Through studying the book it would seem that a cake would be baked every 7 days, possibly a weekly treat for the people at Hill End. A note in the book says ’Note, please pay to baker in three seperate lots.’ Therefore the bakery that was on site at Hill End would bake the puddings.
Here is a list of the cakes that were made from 1944-1955:
- cherries glace
- rock cakes
- queen cakes
- currant bread
- buns
- hot cross buns
- iced buns
- coconut cakes
- rice cakes
